Curriculum Overview Year 4 Spring
Literacy
During the Spring term Year 4 will be exploring a range of fiction, including 'The Iron Man' and 'The Stig of the Dump'. They will also learn about the different features found in non-fiction texts, such as newspapers. In addition, the children will continue to receive regular phonics lessons to improve their reading and spelling.
Numeracy
The children will be revisiting the topics they focused upon last term. However, they will be building upon their understanding to improve their overall knowledge. This will include focusing upon number properties, data handling, problem solving and understanding shape. Each numeracy set will continue to have regular mental maths and multiplication quizzes to develop their mental arithmetic skills.
Geography
'Environmental Issues' is the Geography topic for this term. By the end of the topic the children will be able to understand the impact of pollution upon the environment, how we can reduce this damage, and why recycling is important. It is hoped that an extra curricular visit to 'Carnaby Recycling Plant' can be arranged to accompany this topic.
Art
In Art the children will be researching the work of Paul Klee, and they have the opportunity to recreate his style using oil pastels and water colours. They will also investigate using textiles to create collages, and how to use basic stitches to join materials together. This will be useful during DT week when the children will be creating 'money containers' using fabric.
PE
In PE the children will be following two dance units entitled 'These boots are made for walking' and 'Giraffes can't dance', both of which are very popular. In addition, the children will continue with their weekly games lessons; the activities will remain the same: netball, hockey and football.
Science
Firstly, we will be investigating the topic 'Solids, liquids and gases'. By the end of the unit the children will be able to sort materials into 'solids, liquids and gases', as well as being able to separate materials using a variety of methods.
After the half term the classes will investigate the topic 'Friction', in which they will learn what friction is, how it is caused and how it can be reduced.
French
This term the children will focus upon the unit 'Celebrations'. By the end of the unit, the children should be able to sing 'happy birthday', recite the months and their favourite activities in French.
SEAL
The themes for SEAL this term are 'Going for Goals' and 'Good to be me'. Within these lessons the children will explore different barriers to learning and how they can be over come. Also, the children will have the opportunity to create a plan of action for achieving a personal goal.
ICT
Throughout term Year 4 will use the tools on the computers in school to recreate art by famous artists. In addition, they will be learning how to manipulate images, for example; cropping and rotating pictures.
DT
The final week before half term has been designated as D&T week for Year 4. Throughout the week, the children will design and make a money container. This will give the children the opportunity to practice their sewing skills.
Finally, we would like to remind you that PE is an important aspect of the curriculum, and therefore children need to bring their PE kits to all lessons. If for any reason your child cannot partake, please send a letter into school so that they can be excused from the lesson. All of the children have a copy of the timetable in their merit books, this will outline when their PE kit is required.
